Engine and ride
The 149cc air-cooled engine makes 12.2 bhp and 13.3 Nm through a 5 Speed. With a kerb weight of 139 kg that is 88 bhp per tonne, 67th best power-to-weight of the 73 bikes in this class we have reviewed.
The torque and power figures are well balanced, so it neither needs to be revved hard nor feels lazy when you do.
Chassis hardware includes a rear monoshock, single-channel ABS and traction control, with a disc, 282 mm, 2 piston caliper up front and disc, 220 mm, 1 piston caliper at the rear.
The 810 mm seat is on the tall side. Riders under 5'6" should sit on one before buying.

Riding it every day
At 165mm, ground clearance comfortably clears most speed breakers and potholes without the scraping some naked bikes suffer on Indian roads. The 810mm seat height is tall relative to the standard FZ, worth testing if you're on the shorter side. Real-world mileage of 44-49kmpl trails the FZS V4 slightly, likely due to the extra kerb weight and different aerodynamics. The projector LED headlamp genuinely helps visibility on unlit roads at night.
What to know before buying
Bluetooth connectivity comes standard from the base variant, unlike some FZ trims, useful for call and message alerts while riding. Despite the scrambler looks, the FZ X keeps road tyres and standard suspension travel, so it isn't built for genuine off-roading, only rougher city streets. Yamaha's service network treats it the same as other FZ models for parts and maintenance.
Who should buy it
