Engine and ride
The 399cc liquid-cooled engine makes 45.3 bhp and 39 Nm through a 6 Speed. With a kerb weight of 182 kg that is 249 bhp per tonne, 5th best power-to-weight of the 14 bikes in this class we have reviewed.
The torque and power figures are well balanced, so it neither needs to be revved hard nor feels lazy when you do.
Chassis hardware includes USD front forks, a rear monoshock, single-channel ABS, a slipper clutch and traction control, with a disc, 320 mm, 2 piston caliper up front and disc, 240 mm, 1 piston caliper at the rear.
The 830 mm seat is on the tall side. Riders under 5'6" should sit on one before buying.

The 390 Adventure S sits above the standard 390 Adventure in KTM's touring line, with a stronger 45.3bhp tune of the 398.63cc engine and added ride modes, priced from ₹4,05,011. It is built for riders who want more capability without going fully off-road.
Riding it every day
The 830mm seat height and 237mm ground clearance strike a workable balance between approachability and rough-road ability, and the 21-inch front wheel with WP suspension handles broken city roads and light trails with confidence. At 182kg it stays manageable in slow traffic despite its touring bulk. Ride modes and traction control, genuine additions over the base Adventure, are useful in changing conditions like sudden monsoon rain.
What to know before buying
Real-world mileage typically runs 25-28kmpl, behind both the 250 and standard 390 Adventure, so factor in higher running costs for the extra performance. Single-channel rather than dual-channel ABS is a slightly odd omission at this price point, worth noting if wet-weather braking matters to you. The roughly ₹1.17 lakh premium over the standard 390 Adventure needs weighing against how much of the extra ground clearance and engine tune you will actually use.
Who should buy it
Riders planning genuine mixed-terrain touring, who want more from their 390 Adventure than tarmac comfort alone, will find the S variant's extra capability worth the step up in price.
